Best Time to Book International Flights — A Month-by-Month Guide

Timing Your Booking Is Half the Battle

We get asked this more than almost anything else: ‘When should I book my flights?’ The honest answer is — it depends on where you’re going and when you want to travel. But there are patterns, and once you understand them, you can consistently beat the traveller who books at random.

Here’s how we think about it, month by month.

Why Airline Prices Move the Way They Do

Airlines use dynamic pricing algorithms that adjust fares based on demand, time until departure, and remaining seats. Understanding this is key: there’s a window — usually 3 to 6 months before departure for international flights — where prices are typically at their most competitive before demand fills the aircraft and prices rise.

January — Book Your Summer Flights Right Now

January is one of the cheapest months to actually fly, but more importantly it’s the best time to book summer departures (June–August). Airlines release summer inventory early and prices are at their seasonal floor. If you’re planning a big summer trip, open that search now.

February — Quiet Month, Good Deals

Outside of Valentine’s weekend (which commands a premium), February is relatively quiet. Great time to find deals to European destinations. Also a good window to book spring travel if you haven’t yet.

March — Book Before Spring Break Prices Lock In

Prices start climbing as spring break demand accelerates. If you haven’t locked in Easter or spring holiday flights by early March, you’re in the danger zone. The first two weeks of March are genuinely your last chance for reasonable fares on peak school holiday dates.

April — One of the Best Months to Actually Travel

Post-spring break demand drops, summer pricing hasn’t fully kicked in, and the weather in most destinations is beautiful. April is a genuine sweet spot for European and Asian travel. Flights and accommodation are both meaningfully cheaper than June or July.

May — Watch for Flash Sales on Summer Inventory

Airlines often run sales in May to fill remaining summer seats before demand peaks. Set fare alerts and check frequently. We’ve seen August departures to Europe appear at near-shoulder-season prices during brief May promotions.

June — Expect to Pay Peak Prices

Summer has arrived and so have the crowds and the fares. If you haven’t booked by now, look at mid-week departures and less mainstream destinations for better value. The window for cheap summer travel has largely closed.

July and August — Peak of Peak Season

The most expensive months to fly internationally, full stop. School holidays, summer vacations, and festival season combine to push prices to annual highs. If you must travel now, book months in advance. Late August sometimes offers slightly better value as the peak begins easing.

September — The Seasoned Traveller’s Secret

Arguably the single best month to travel internationally. Summer crowds have dispersed, prices drop sharply, and the weather across most destinations remains excellent. We book September travel in May or June and it consistently delivers the best value-to-experience ratio of the year.

October — Autumn Deals and Lower Competition

October continues the shoulder season value. Long-haul routes in particular see significant price drops. Destinations like Japan (autumn foliage season) and the Mediterranean are stunning and noticeably cheaper than peak.

November — The Hidden Gem of Cheap Travel

The first three weeks of November are among the cheapest travel weeks of the entire year. Very low demand, real airline competition for passengers, and excellent conditions in many destinations. Book November travel in August for the best prices. Avoid Thanksgiving week if travelling from the US — prices spike dramatically.

December — Book Months Ahead or Pay the Price

Christmas and New Year flights should be booked 6–9 months in advance — no exceptions. The first two weeks of December (before school holidays kick in) offer much more reasonable fares if you have flexibility. Book early; regret nothing.

The Rules That Always Apply

  • Book 3–6 months ahead for international flights as a baseline
  • Shoulder seasons (April–May and September–October) consistently offer the best value
  • Set fare alerts and monitor from 6 months out — don’t rely on a single price check
  • Flexibility in travel dates is worth more than any other single tactic

One Final Thought
